Nature of Application:
Pre development archaeological sensitivity site inspection
Date of Site Visit:
Thursday, 14 May 2015
HWC Representatives:
Guy Thomas, Andrew September, Harriet Clift (City of Cape Town, APM)
Met on Site By:
NA
Reasons for Site Inspection:
An application had been received for the development of the site by the city of cape town. due to the known sensitivities of the melbostrand coastline, the staff endevoured to investigate the site for any archaeological material, so as to better inform the applicant of their responsibilities.
Findings of Site Inspection:
the site is currently open. a previous structure was built on the property but has been subsequently demolished. small scale scatter of archaeological shell was observed over the site. it is likely that the more sensitive areas are tot he rear of the property away from the beach. it is likely that archaeological material will be encountered when the earth works are started on the site.
Recommended Action:
the applicant was informed that the site will need to be monitored by an accredited archaeologist for dealing with coastal archaeological resources. Harriet Clift (CoCT) indicated that the city is willing to provide monitoring for minor earth works, but theat large scale developemnts need to have professional archaeologists appointed to monitor sites full time. the monitoring should take place and if any significant archaeology is encountered, the a collections permit should be sought for the long term curation of the material.
