Reasons for Site Inspection:
A member of the public was concerned that there was excessive vandalism to the building identified as the original "Ou Tolhuis" serving the Sir Lowry's Pass/Gantouw Pass prior to the construction of the present day mountain pass. The building is located on Farm Knorhoek 839, Sir Lowry's Pass Village which lies on the proposed Casa Maris Eco-Estate site.
Heritage Officers went to investigate whether there has been excessive damage done to the building in question.
Findings of Site Inspection:
Heritage Officers noted that the building has suffered under neglect however the status of the building, regarding damage, has not changed since the last HWC site inspection conducted on the 3rd November 2014 in relation to the submitted HIA for the proposed development on the site in question. However HWC can only take action only when the owner is conducting illegal alterations and additions which neither is being taken place. The building has yet to be formally graded by HWC and the City of Cape Town.
Recommended Action:
The HWC Officials will inform the owner/manager of the estate on the findings of the site inspection and recommend that the owner takes better measures to secure the site.
