Reasons for Site Inspection:
A member of the public informed us that there was an uncovered ruin during excavation work on Erf 90328. HWC Officials went to inspect the ruins to see if it is archaeological and whether a stopworks order must be implemented.
Findings of Site Inspection:
HWC Officials judged from the composition of the ruins as well as the material culture that was associated with the structure that it might date back to the late 19th century/early 20th century. However a lot of the material culture associated with the structure and it's context was scattered and disturbed by excavation work that had taken place before the site visit. In order to salvage the remaining archaeological context of the ruins, a stopworks order was issued to the owner.
Recommended Action:
HWC officials recommend that the owners submit a Section 35 archaeological permit to HWC and hire an appropriate archaeologist to implement the archaeological mitigation for the ruins and the remaining archaeological material associated withe historic structure. HWC Officials will also investigate the proposed alterations and landscaping on the site.
